LLF promoter loves his luchadoras
LLF promoter loves his luchadoras
By COREY DAVID LACROIX -- SLAM! Wrestling
MONTERREY, Mexico - Nestled in the Sierra Madre mountains in the state of Neuvo Leon, lies the city of Monterrey. It is the third largest city in Mexico, holding the proud distinction of being the industrial heart of this nation of over 100 million people.
Driving through the city, one can see the entrepreneurial spirit that has taken hold here. Modern amenities such as office buildings, hotels and malls dot the urban sprawl. Consumers here have little problem finding a diverse selection of modern products to choose from.
But this community holds another distinction; that of being the home of Mexico's only all-women's lucha libre promotion.
Owned by Monterrey business man Luciano Alberto Garcia de Luna, the Lucha Libre Femenil (LLF) promotion recently celebrated its third anniversary. For de Luna, his passion for lucha libre started in childhood.
"I have followed wrestling for many years," said de Luna in an exclusive interview with SLAM! Wrestling. "When I was a boy, I would go with my father to watch wrestling. To me it was spectacular."
It was those early years that de Luna was privileged to watch the many lucha libre stars do battle in the squared circle. Included among those he saw were a select few women wrestlers (luchadoras). They included such names as Lola Gonzales, Irma Gonzalez, Irma Aguilar and Sirenita.
"It was something very different to see women wrestling," recalled de Luna, explaining that women wrestlers were not a common thing to see at many lucha shows. "They were very good wrestlers."
In time, de Luna grew into manhood, all the while continuing to enjoy wrestling. But he also noticed a disturbing trend with many lucha promotions not having any women wrestling. "For me, to not have women wrestling on a show is incomplete," de Luna said.

Luchadoras contra el Robot Asesino
Luchadoras contra el Robot Asesino
(Never released in an English-dubbed version)
Luchadoras contra el Robot Asesino introduces the viewers to two new wrestling women, Gaby (Regina Torne) and Gema (Malu Reyes). As this was the first of the wrestling women series to be shot in color, it was also the first to be released on video.
Dr. Orlak, your typical loony scientist, makes a robot to help him with his dastardly schemes. Also assisting him are his assistant Waldo and a Frankenstein-like monster named Carfax. Orlak is kidnapping scientists to help him perfect a device that will turn regular people into robot-slaves. One captured scientist balks at helping Orlak and he's unceremoniously killed for his refusal. This scientist's niece is Gaby, a popular female wrestler. She and her partner Gema, are joined by two policemen Arturo (Joaquin Cordero) and Chava (Hector Lechugo) in their quest to bring the killer to justice. They all go to Orlak's hideout where they're captured and fitted with special bracelets made of "Acridium." These bracelets subject them to Orlak's will, in effect making them human-robots. Gaby manages to remove her bracelet and she places it on the real robot. This causes the mechanical man to go berserk, wreck Orlak's lab and kill Waldo (as well as some of the captive scientists). The robot is finally destroyed and Orlak is mad (in addition to being insane). He swears revenge on Gaby. This revenge takes the form of his latest creation, a masked-super-human-female-wrestling-robot named Electra. He sets up a match with Gaby. During the bout, Orlak is discovered and he tries to escape. He and his creation climb to the top of the arena, where they both fall to their death.
As was a common practice during the late 1960s (in films like, Santo en el Tesoro de Dracula) Luchadoras contra el Robot Asesino was also released in a pornographic version (with added nude footage). The "sex" version was called El Asesino Loco y el Sexo, and was exported for foreign markets only. The monstrous Carfax has an expanded role in this version, as it is he who get's the tough job of tearing women's clothing off.
The top-billed Joaquin Cordero and Regina Torne were new to the Luchadora series, but not to Mexican genre films in general. Cordero starred in; La Loba, Orlak, el Infierno de Frankenstein, Monstruo de los Volcanes, a pair of Dr. Satan films and the first two Santo outings. Torne showed up in; Los Canallas (with Mil Mascaras), Blue Demon y las Invasoras, Rocambole vs las Mujeres Arpias, Pacto Diabolica and Senora Muerte (the last two with John Carradine). While not available in an English version, Luchadoras contra el Robot Asesino is well worth seeking out. There are far worse ways to spend 80 minutes.

Las mujeres panteras [The Panther Women]
Las mujeres panteras [The Panther Women]
After a long wait, I finally got to see this entry in the Luchadoras series, and while it is a decent picture, my pleasure was dulled by the realization that Alfredo Salazar had done it again. The plot is a variation on El mundo de los vampiros (which Salazar adapted from a story by others), and large portions of the script were subsequently re-used for Santo y Blue Demon contra Drácula y el Hombre Lobo, right down to some of the dialogue. Consequently, a film I had never seen before was all too familiar.
Add to this a rather abrupt, anti-climactic conclusion, a miscast Ariadne Welter (replacing Lorena Velázquez), and a disappointing performance by "Loco" Valdés in the comic relief slot, and Las mujeres panteras has a couple of strikes against it. But there are a number of positive aspects as well, not the least of which is the presence of Elizabeth Campbell in her last Luchadoras outing. Campbell looks great (as usual), and her character is significantly more active and assertive than Welter. In addition to the titular panther women (all two of them)--who look a little silly in their furry beanies with ears, but one can't expect too much, can one?--there is a big zombie-like monster (Angel Di Stefani, a former Aztec Mummy) who looks appropriately gruesome but doesn't have much to do and dies far too easily. One odd aspect is the inclusion of a masked hero, El Angel, who is a professional wrestler (like Santo) and a crime-fighter (like Santo), and even has a secret lab (like Santo) and drives a convertible sports car (like Santo). His dialogue is dubbed, like Santo. However, I've seen El Santo, and El Angel is not El Santo. He isn't bad, but the script really uses him as just one part of the heroic ensemble--which includes the Luchadoras and Eric del Castillo and Loco Valdés as police agents--and he doesn't have much of a personality. On balance, however, Las mujeres panteras is an entertaining picture, well-paced and with a good amount of action.
The film opens in a secret cave, where high priestess Satanasa gives a quick introduction to the plot (in the guise of an invocation to other members of the cult): 200 years before, their leader Eloím was killed by a member of the Pietra Santa family, wielding the "Druid sword." Over the years, the cult has had its revenge, so that now only 4 members of the Pietra Santa family are left--and soon there will be zero.
The scene shifts to the arena, where Gloria Venus and The Golden Rubí are involved in a tag team match. [Both Welter and Campbell do a fair amount of their own wrestling in the two arena matches shown in the picture. In the second match, Welter's double is rather obvious, since her hair is longer and darker, but Campbell seems to have done most of her own stunts, although several falls are done in extreme long shot so it's hard to tell for sure. However, Campbell's body type is fairly distinctive, and it would have been hard to find a real female wrestler that tall and--relatively--slim.] After the match, the Luchadoras are greeted in their dressing room by Gloria's uncle Professor Pietra Santa and his son Ramón. They go out to a nightclub and watch Tongo perform an exotic dance; afterwards, Ramón introduces her as his fiancee (he's a widower with a young daughter). [Tongolele still looks good as a dancer, but she is obviously considerably older than Genaro Moreno and has a rather hard face; in this scene, she also has about a pound of sequins on each eyelid.]

Las luchadoras vs el Médico Asesino [The Wrestling Women vs. the Murderous Doctor]
Salazar's script for Las luchadoras vs. el Médico Asesino took elements of horror and wrestling (from Ladrón de cadáveres, particularly) and added a bit of sexual titillation. The concept of wrestling women was popular enough to inspire a series of six Calderón films: Las luchadoras vs. el Médico Asesino, Las luchadoras vs. la momia ('64), Las lobas del ring ('64), Las mujeres panteras ('66), Las luchadoras vs. el robot asesino ('68) and El horripilante bestia humana ('68--although this featured only one female wrestler).
The last two films were unofficial remakes of Las luchadoras vs. el Médico Asesino (although Salazar was only credited on Robot asesino), but with added gore and nudity that would have been prohibited just six years earlier. Three of the series were dubbed into English: Doctor of Doom (Médico Asesino), Wrestling Women vs. the Aztec Mummy (Las luchadoras vs. la momia), and Night of the Bloody Apes (Horripilante bestia).
Las luchadoras vs el Médico Asesino [The Wrestling Women vs. the Murderous Doctor]
Professor Ruiz and his assistant Boris are trying to create a race of superhumans via brain transplants. One of their failed experiments, Gomar, is a brutish creature who is kept in a cage and fed raw meat. Perhaps for this reason, Ruiz has now switched to transplanting brains into women, with no discernable success. One of his "donors" is Alicia, whose sister is professional wrestler Gloria Venus. Ruiz starts to think that perhaps a female athlete might be a better subject for his medical hijinks: he sends Gomar and some (human) henchmen after Gloria and her new friend, wrestler Rubí, but the women best their attackers.
Gloria and Rubí become friends with Armando and Chema, two police agents trying to solve the mystery. Boris is captured but is killed before he can identify Ruiz as the mad killer; Chema and Armando are kidnaped by Ruiz, but are saved by Gloria and Rubí. In the struggle, Ruiz has acid thrown in his face, and the laboratory catches fire.
However, Ruiz survives and transplants Gomar's brain into a woman wrestler's body; he names the resulting creation "Vendetta" (since Gomar is male, this is actually a sort of sex-change operation for him). Vendetta wrestles Gloria and is gaining the upper hand, when Rubí spots Marcado, one of Ruiz's henchmen, in the arena. Marcado, under pressure, admits Vendetta's masked manager is really the scarred Ruiz. The police are alerted, and Vendetta and Ruiz flee to the top of a nearby tower. Armando climbs up in pursuit, but is nearly killed; Chema shoots and kills Ruiz and Vendetta.
Oddly enough, while the "arena" wrestling scenes feature Lorena Velázquez doing some of her own stunts, she and Elizabeth Campbell are (somewhat obviously) doubled in most of the other action sequences (particularly one where Marcado and another henchman attack Gloria and Rubí in their bedroom). In general, actual women wrestlers of this era (some appear in the film as themselves) were stocky and not exactly movie-star beautiful (to put it mildly), and thus the mostly-doubled wrestling and action sequences are the least entertaining aspects of these films (this wasn't an issue for Santo, Blue Demon, etc., who were wrestlers first and "acted" by virtue of dubbed dialogue

LuFisto - AAA Luchadora
Real Wrestler Name: Genny Goulet
NickNames First Lady of Hardcore
Wrestler Name history Lucifer (debut - 97), Lucy Fer (97 - 99), Precious Lucy (99 - 8/03), LuFisto (8/03 -)
Trained by: Pierre Marchessault, Patrick Lewisin, Len Shelley
Birth date February 15, 1980 - Sorel, Quebec, Canada
Pro Wrestling Debut June 23, 1997, in Sorel, Quebec, Canada
Height 5'3"/160 cms
Weight 135 lbs/63 kg

Titles: UWA Cruiserweight Wrestling Title, ICW Provincial Wrestling Title (2), ICW Tag Team Titles (2, with Sexy Julie, with Mister Saturday Night Mart), ASW Canadian Title, CZW Iron Man Championsip LLF Extreme Title, SAW World Title
Genny Goulet is a French Canadian professional wrestler who works under the ring name LuFisto. She last worked for Combat Zone Wrestling where she is the former CZW Iron Man Champion.
Known as the "First Lady of Hardcore",she has held multiple championships from all around the world, both women's and men's titles.
In 2002, she was booked to appear in the main event of Blood, Sweat N' Ears in a match featuring Ontario hardcore wrestler "Bloody" Bill Skullion. The Ontario Athletics Commission, citing a regulation that prevented mixed male and female wrestling , threatened to withdraw the license for the show. This essentially banned Lufisto from wrestling in Ontario. Goulet filed a complaint with the Ontario Human Rights Commission. On February 26, 2006, the OHRC informed Goulet that they had convinced the OAC to drop the regulation. The OAC also dropped the vast majority of the regulations affecting professional wrestling in Ontario, a move which removed a great deal of the bureaucracy stifling independant wrestling in the province. Many industry observers credit Lufisto for this.
Goulet works primarily for National Wrestling Alliance's NWA Quebec promotion, where she is head trainer (along with Dru Onyx) of their wrestling school, "Onyx & LuFisto's Torture Chamber". She also works for Combat Zone Wrestling, where, on August 12, 2006 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, LuFisto became the first ever female CZW Iron Man Champion, pinning Kevin Steen to win the title. She also wrestled in the International Wrestling Syndicate then known as the Internet Wrestling Syndicate in 2002 where she feuded with the Arsenal. It culminated at Scarred for Life 2002 where she defeated the Arsenal in one of the bloodiest matches ever. She left the IWS in 2003, but returned in 2006 and formed a tag team with Sexxxy Eddy called the Missionaries of Violence. They challenged for the IWS Tag Team Titles against the Hardcore Ninjaz in a losing effort on August 26, 2006 and once again on September 30.
She debuted in SHIMMER Women Athletes on October 24, 2006 in Berwyn, Illinois. She lost her first match to Mercedes Martinez, but regrouped and won her second match against Allison Danger.
On October 29. 2006 she won the Stranglehold Wrestling Death Match Tournament, the first deathmatch tournament in Canada. In the first round she defeated the Juggulator, in the second round she defeated Skullion in a lighttube match and defeated Necro Butcher in the finals to win the tournament.
On November 3 and 4, 2006 she was going to participate in IWA Mid-South's first-ever Queen of the Death Matches Tournament in Plainfield, Indiana. She showed up for the show but had to pull out of the tournament because of a broken hand she suffered in the final of the Stranglehold tournament, from hitting Necro Butcher in the head.
On December 9, 2006, after a brutal tag match at the CZW Cage of Death event, she became the first female ever to wrestle inside of the Cage of Death match when she added herself in the last minute in a match that also involved Zandig, Nick Gage, and Lobo. Gage would go on to win the match by pinning Zandig.
On January 8, 2007, she announced on her web site a possible retirement due to a back problem and that she would be forfeiting the Iron Man Championship.
On February 19th, 2012, LuFisto made her debut for the Mexican promotion Original Pro-Lucha, defeating La Vaquerita to win the Lucha POP Women's Championship.
On February 21st, 2013, Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) announced that LuFisto had signed with the promotion.
She made her debut on March 1st, defeating Cynthia Moreno to advance to the finals of a tournament for the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship.
On March 17th at Rey de Reyes, LuFisto was defeated by Faby Apache in a four-way elimination tournament final, which also included Mari Apache and Taya.

Dark Angel - Luchadora
Dark Angel
Dirty choke holds. Serious injuries. Dangerous, high-flying leaps. It's all part of a wild and wacky spectacle called the Lucha Libre - or free fight.
It's a wrestling style unique to Mexico. From big city arenas, like the one in Mexico City, to a makeshift ring in the tiny town square in Jilotepec, crowds of all ages pack wrestling venues to cheer on their favorite Luchadores. And the die-hard fans insist the Lucha Libre is the most electrifying form of pro wrestling on the planet.
Amid this spectacle is a rising star of the Lucha Libre; an unassuming Prairie girl from Winnipeg -- Sarah Stock. Here in Mexico, she's known as Dark Angel, and the fans love the athletic sensation who proudly displays maple leaves on her costume. What makes Dark Angel a crowd favorite is her daring, breathtaking moves inside the ring. But the 26-year-old petite powerhouse is not your average jock.
Stock was an honors student at the University of Manitoba, on track for a career in medicine. But along the way she took a very, very sharp turn in her career path.
"I was not enjoying what I was doing," recalls Stock. "But while I was studying I was also kickboxing and really enjoyed it, the whole physical aspect and from there, I just decided I wanted to try some other sort of contact sport."
Wrestling fit the bill and when she heard about the Lucha Libre, Stock bought a bus ticket and headed south to Nuevo Larado, Mexico. She had a contact number with a Canadian trainer and didn't speak any Spanish. But Stock was a quick learner who had excelled in French at university, and was soon fluent in Spanish.
Stock settled in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey. There, she lives a simple existence in a downtown apartment. She says she doesn't need much to live but that's an understatement -- her digs are downright Spartan.
Her wrestling jobs take her across Mexico, usually travelling by bus. Stock tends to sleep on the journey, so she doesn't mind the long hauls.
Still single and career focused; Stock has fallen for the easygoing Mexican lifestyle.
"Maybe it's due to the heat but people seem to take things a lot easier, a lot lighter," muses Stock. "From what I've seen, the Mexicans love to laugh, you know they love to joke around and take life a little less seriously. Some of the things that are important in Canada aren't all that important here.

Bibi's box: Fifi and Bibi Poubelle
"The twins Vera and Barbara Duffy, aka 'Gemelas Poubelles', aka 'Les Maids Mecontentes', and most known as Fifi and Bibi Poubelle are burlesque performers and luchardoras. They starred a series of pictures as French maids, luchadoras, in the dream land and films. It's just a small part of their site. One of the nice pages to explore is Les Luchardoras that has a vast collection of pictures of their performances at Lucha Va VOOM! and other events."
