The Top Ten Luchadoras - October 2014

I thought I would do something I haven't done in a long time here, and list the top ten searched for luchadoras on this blog last month.
I used to do this all the time, but I kinda fell out of it.
And like back when I used to do this, there were some real surprises....

The Top Ten Luchadoras - October 2014 - Sexy Star

1. Sexy Star
Well this was no surprise to me.
What was a surprise was the huge margin she won by.
You could take all the other luchadoras in the top ten list and add them together and they still wouldn't equal Sexy's numbers.

2. Martha Villalobos
Another surprise.
Why?
Because Martha has been in the top ten for ages.

3. Faby Apache
AAA Luchadora Fabiola Balbuena Torres aka Faby Apache came in at number 3.

4. Lady Apache
The former step-mother of Faby, Sandra González Calderón, came in at number 4.

5. Esther Moreno
AAA Luchadora and two time AAA Reina de Reinas Champion came in at number 5.

6. Cynthia Moreno
At number 6 we have one of Esther's sisters, Cynthia Moreno.

7. Estrellita
Coming in at number 6 we have Viviana Ochoa Barradas aka CMLL luchadora Estrellita.

8. Xóchitl Hamada
Number 8 is the sister of Ayako Hamada and the daughter of Gran Hamada, Xóchitl Hamada.

9. Irma Aguilar
At number 9 we have legendary Mexican female wrestler, Irma Aguilar.

10. Marcela
And finally we have María Elena Santamaría Gómez, better known as CMLL luchadora Marcela.
Since her debut in 1985, she has held the CMLL World Women's Championship three times, tying with Lady Apache.

Faby Apache - Mexican Women Wrestling

One of the most popular luchadoras on this blog is Fabiola Balbuena Torres aka Faby Apache.
Even though she lost the Reina de Reinas Championship to Taya on August 17 at Triplemanía XXII, her fans still love her.

Mickie James vs Faby Apache in Mexico

Here is former WWE Diva and TNA Knockout Mickie James getting the better of Lucha Libre star Faby Apache.
I think this is at AAA's Triplemanía XIX back in 2011, but I'm not sure.
That was when La Legión Extranjera (Angelina Love, Mickie James, Sexy Star and Velvet Sky) defeated Cynthia Moreno, Faby Apache, Mari Apache and Lolita in an eight woman tag team match.

LuFisto vs Faby Apache - Lucha Libre

Here is French Canadian female pro wrestler LuFisto trying to give luchadora Faby Apache a facelift.
The hard way....from a Camel Clutch.
LuFisto has worked for Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) and I'm not sure but I think this picture may be from the finals of a tournament for the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship on March 17th at Rey de Reyes.

Here Faby goes for a bridging suplex pin.

AAA Luchadora Faby Apache

The big news with AAA luchadora Faby Apache is that a few days ago (April 6th, 2012) her sister Mari Apache turned ruda (heel) and started a rivalry with her.

Faby Apache and Aerostar Wrestling Alex Koslov and Christina Von Eerie

Christina Von Eerie

This match is a little different.
It's Faby Apache and Aerostar taking on Alex Koslov and Christina Von Eerie in a mixed tag-team match in Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA).

Faby Apache

The match is also for the mixed tag team championship.

Of course in Lucha Libre, a mixed match isn't a one-sided joke like it is in the WWE here.
The women get and give just as good as the men do.

Alex Koslov quickly learns this as Faby takes him down right off the bat.

And in a moment, she has a leg lock submission hold clamped on.

Several quick exchanges, reversals, and lighting fast lucha libre moves later, it looks like Faby and Aerostar have everything under control.

But Alex catches Faby with a forearm and the tide of the battle changes.
Then Aerostar gets double-teamed, then Faby, then everyone is in (and outside) the ring.

It's a decent match, I would have liked to seen Christina Von Eerie and Faby mix it up more, but hey, you can't have everything.

La Diabolica and Cynthia Moreno Versus Faby Apache and Mary Apache

Here is a video of luchadoras La Diabolica and Cinthia Moreno taking on the sister team of Faby Apache and Mary Apache in a match for the Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) wrestling promotion in Mexico.
This video was posted by TheCatchChannel on YouTube.
If you haven't checked out the Catch Channel yet, you should, because he has a lot of very good Lucha Libre video posted there.

One thing that makes this match so cool to me is that it's done in an outside venue, which is a big change from what you see here in the WWE and TNA.

And of course we have some interference from Billy Boy, that's thwarted by Aerostar.
But unlike wrestling here, just because their male counterparts get involved, the match doesn't end, and the focus doesn't shift to them.
The focus stays on the ladies wrestling.

And you have to look at the caliber of performer that you are seeing in the wrestling ring.
La Diabolica made her Lucha Libre debut back in 1986, Cinthia Moreno has been wrestling since 1987, Faby Apache debuted in 1998 and Mary Apache started her Lucha Libre career in 2000.
So Mary is the least experienced woman in the ring...with only nine years wrestling experience!
Compare that to a lot of the WWE Divas or TNA Knockouts.

Well good old YouTube deleted that match.
Act surprised.
But here is La Diabolica, Cynthia Moreno and Billy Boy vs Mary, Faby Apache and Aerostar
Until they delete this one too.....

The Lack of Luchadoras

Despite Sarita (Dark Angel, Sarah Stock) having a really good time in TNA (she and Taylor Wilde are the TNA Knockout Tag Team Champions) it doesn't look like the luchadoras in Mexico are getting much of a push.
I was really hoping that Sarita would stir a little more interest in the female wrestlers of Lucha Libre.
But looking back at the major Mexican promotions so far this year, that doesn't to have seemed to happened.

Sarita and Taylor Wilde when they were in TNA

Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA), held their Rey de Reyes (King of Kings) tournament back on March 15, 2009.
The AAA Reina de Reinas (Queen of Queens) tournament is usually held around the same time, but so far, they haven't had one yet.
The last one was on May 28, 2008 and was won by Faby Apache.

At AAA's Triplemania XVII, there were no luchadoras matches, although Billy Boy, Sexy Star, Polvo de Estrellas, and Mini Abismo Negro took on El Elegido, Faby Apache, Pimpinela Escarlata, and Octagoncito in an Eight Person "Atómicos" Tag Team match and won.

At Verano de Escandalo on August 21, 2009, again there was no luchadora match, but Fabi Apache, Sexy Star, Billy Boy and Aero Star were all involved in a Luchas de Apuestas, Steel Cage "hair/mask" match which Billy Boy lost.

At Heroes Inmortales III, Faby Apache will defend her Reina de Reinas Championship against Sexy Star in a "Bull Terrier" match.

Over at Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) the luchadoras didn't fair much better.

At Homenaje a Dos Leyendas on March 20, 2009, there were no luchadoras.

Infierno en del Ring 2009 on July 31, 2009 no luchadoras.

BUT, at the CMLL 76th Anniversary Show held on September 18, 2009 in Arena Mexico, Mexico City, amazingly Dark Angel herself showed up and teamed with Lady Apache to take on and defeat La Amapola and Hiroka in a tag team match.
