Lola Gonzales - Mexican Female Wrestlers

Here's some "old school" pictures of Luchadora Lola Gonzales.
Lola was the sister of luchadora Leslie Gonzalez and was pretty much a legend in Lucha Libre.
Although her main claim to fame was in Mexico, she also wrestled in other countries including the United States and Japan.

Lola Gonzales - Mexican Female Wrestlers

During her career she held the Mexican National Women's Championship twice, the JDStar TWF World Women's Championship, the NWA California Women's Championship, Universal Wrestling Association World Women's Championship four times, the WWA World Women's Championship, the Occidente Women's Championship and the EWWL Women's Championship.

She regularly worked for Universal Wrestling Association (UWA), Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) and Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA).

The CMLL Luchadora Roster

I havent done a roster listing in quite a while so here are the luchadoras currently on the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) roster (to the best of my knowledge).

wrestler, wrestling, womens wrestling, mexican wrestling, female mexican wrestling
Tiffany - Photo: Yahoo! Deportes Mexico

Tiffany
Dark Angel (Sarah Stock)
Lluvia
Marcela - CMLL World Women's Champion
Silueta - CMLL-Reina International Junior Champion
Estrellita
León - Reina-CMLL International Champion
Zeuxis
La Amapola
Lady Apache
Goya Kong
Mima Shimoda
Princesa Blanca - Mexican National Women's Champion
La Comandante
La Seductora
Lady Afrodita
Luna Mágica
Princesa Sujei
Dalys la Caribeña

One thing I noticed in looking at this roster is that a large portion of these luchadoras are in their 30s and 40s.
Mima is 42 and Marcela is 41.
That would be a little unusual in the WWE, but not in lucha libre.

More Luchadoras on YouTube

luchadora, luchadoras, mexican female wrestlers

Here is a video posted on YouTube by newscott of luchadoras Dark Angel (Sarah Stock), Marcela and Lluvia wrestling Princesa Sugey, Hiroka and Rosa Negra in CMLL.
This is just part one, and it runs ten minutes.
And I'm not even gonna bore you with asking when was the last ten minute WWE Diva match you saw.

Anyway, the action is very fast paced, and the Rudas (heels) really dominate the technicas in the first round.
But the technicas come back in the second round after Marcela catches fire and clears house.

Luchadoras Wrestling In CMLL

Here is a lucha libre video I found on YouTube of Marcela, Dark Angel and Lady Apache going up against Amapola, Princesa Sujei and Medusa in the CMLL.
This is part one of a two part video that was posted by TheCatchChannel who BTW has a lot of good lucha libre videos on his channel.
Like I said, this is part one of a two part video and part one alone is edited but still runs 10:27.
When's the last time you saw a WWE Diva's match go 10 minutes?
And like I said, that's just part one.

I really don't like Princesa Sujei's bleached blond hair.
I think she looked better the other way.

The IWA Women's Wrestling Championship

The current IWA Champion, Amazona

International Wrestling Association (IWA) is the other big lucha libre promotion in Puerto Rico.
It was actually started in Japan in 1994 by promoter Victor Quiñones.
The company has had ties in the past with the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
This IWA should not be confused with the IWA started by Eddie Einhorn in the mid 1970s.

The IWA Women's World Wrestling Championship seems to be a very short lived title.
I don't know if records weren't kept, or they just didn't have a women's belt before 2007.
But according to the IWA website, there have only been three champions.

The first was Amazona, then the current WWC Women's Champion Sweet Nancy, then Genesis, and finally Amazona again on November 15th, 2008.

Sarah Stock, Luchadora to TNA Knockout

Taking a break from the WWC History.....
Well I suppose the big news is that luchadora Sarah Stock, Dark Angel, is now going to be referred to as TNA Knockout Sarah Stock.
Yes TNA has finally signed the lovely CMLL star and I guess now she bids farewell to Mexico.
For the time being at least.
TNA has been after Sarah since the Knockouts division started.

The WWC Women's Wrestling Championship

Wendi Richter, the first ever WWC Women's Wrestling Champion

In the US, lucha libre is associated with Mexico.
But there are other countries where lucha libre is popular.
For example, Puerto Rico.
In Puerto Rico the two big wrestling promotions are The World Wrestling Council (WWC) and The International Wrestling Association (IWA).
Both of these wrestling promotions have luchadoras.

The World Wrestling Council has a Women's Championship that has been contested since May of 1987.
Their first ever champion was Wendi Richter. She defeated Monster Ripper in a tournament to become the first champion.
Then Monster Ripper turned around and took the title in the same year defeating Wendi.
Wendi Richter reclaimed the title, defeating Monster Ripper in Trinidad and Tobago on July 28, 1987.
Richter left the promotion and the title was vacated.
Monster Ripper got the belt back after defeating Candi Devine in a tournament on July 7, 1990 in Bayamón, PR.
Sasha got the belt on October 13, 1990 and she and Monster Ripper traded the belt back and forth like this:
Monster Ripper won it on November 10, 1990, Sasha got it back on December 15, 1990, Monster Ripper took it back on March 9, 1991, Candi Devine stepped in and broke the streak on May 11, 1991, Monster Ripper defeated her and took the belt back on September 9, 1991and Sasha in turn won it back on October 5, 1991.
Then La Tigresa broke everything up by winning the title from Sasha on April 26, 1992.
Due to some controversy, the title was held up after a match on June 13, 1992 between La Tigresa and Sasha.
There was a rematch set for July 22, 1992, but Sasha no showed and the belt went to La Tigresa.

To be continued.......
